Professional Information

Tom was admitted to both the South Carolina and North Carolina Bars in 1995 and is admitted to practice before the state and federal courts of South Carolina and North Carolina as well as the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is also a South Carolina Supreme Court-certified mediator. Tom is a member of the NSBA Council of School Attorneys and the South Carolina Council of School Attorneys.

Practice Areas

Tom’s practice concentrates on employment issues and all types of civil litigation on behalf of school districts, insurers, business, and individuals. He provides advice and assistance with various types of education and operations-related legal issues such as procurement and contracts, facilities issues, and constitutional matters involving employees and students, with a focus on employment discrimination, wrongful discharge, wage and hour, and employee leave situations. Tom has successfully defended various types of tort, contract, and constitutional cases involving schools and other governmental entities, as well as private business and individuals, before trial and appellate courts in the Carolinas. He has obtained numerous favorable trial verdicts and summary dismissals before trial. Tom frequently presents seminars and in-services on employment, risk management, and education-related topics.

Personal Background

Tom grew up in Robbinsville, North Carolina, and his parents served as educators in the North Carolina public schools. Tom’s wife is a school nurse and his two daughters graduated from Lexington High School.
